Dear Colleague,

We wish to extend a cordial invitation to you to participate in the 2nd INTERNATIONAL BERLIN BAT MEETING: BAT BIOLOGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES to be held from 19-21 February 2010, in Berlin, Germany. The aim of this symposium is to foster an exchange of ideas among international specialists from many disciplines working on bat diseases and bat biology.

Plenary Talks

We have invited four plenary speakers to review thought-provoking and visionary topics regarding bat biology, infectious diseases and parasites.

  • Emerging viral diseases of bats (Dr. Hume Field, Queensland Department of Primary Industries & Fisheries, Australia)
  • Bats and rabies (Prof. Tony Fooks, Veterinary Laboratories Agency, United Kingdom)
  • Bats and mycoses: The white-nose syndrome (Dr. David Blehert, U.S.A) 
  • Bat parasites (Dr. Carl Dick, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, USA)
  • Bat diseases and conservation (Prof. Paul Racey, University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom)

Sessions

We suggest several exciting topics as sessions or workshops:

Pre-Symposium Workshop "Care and medical managment of captive bats"

We would like to announce a pre-symposium workshop about the "Care and medical management of captive bats". This workshop will focus on three aspects of bat rehabilitation: appropriate care for juvenile bats, rehabilitation of injured bats, and appropriate protective measures against bat diseases for people dealing with captive and/or injured bats. The pre-symposium workshop will be held between 2pm - 5 pm on the 19th of February at the same facilities as the conference. Any participants of the conference may submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation. The program is compiled by Jeroen van der Kooij (Norwegian Zoological Society) and Dr. Kerstin Müller (Small Animal Clinic, Dept. of Veterinary Medicine, Free University of Berlin). On Sunday the 21st of February from 4:30pm - 7:00 pm a repetition of the pre-symposium workshop on "Care and medical management of captive bats" will be held in German language.

Post-Symposium Workshop (in deutsch / in german language only)

Pflege und medizinische Versorgung von Fledermäusen
Sonntag, den 21.02. 2010, 16:30  - 19:00 Uhr  
Der Workshop wird folgende Themen beinhalten:
- Rehabilitation verletzter Fledermäuse
- Fütterung und medizinische Versorgung von juvenilen Fledermäusen
- Umgang mit Fledermäusen
- Medizinische Versorgung von Fledermäusen
- Management von Fledermäusen in Gefangenschaft
- Fledermausauswilderung
Der Workshop wird moderiert von Jeroen van der Kooij ((Norwegian Zoological Society) und Dr. Kerstin Müller (Poliklinik für Kleintiere, Freie Universität Berlin).
Teilnehmer können Zusammenfassungen von Vorträgen und Postern für den Workshop anmelden. Einsendeschluß für das Einreichen von Abstracts ist der 15. Dezember 2009 !
