The IZW is doing research work in Evolutionary
Biology and Ecology, Wildlife Diseases and Reproduction
Biology. The experts are analysing mammals and birds
in their interaction with people and biotic and abiotic
environment (biotope, nutrition, pathogens and predator-prey
relationship).
Main aim is research on adaption
activities and limits of greater wild life and their
role in semi-natural and semi-cultural ecosystems. Main
focused regions are Central Europe, East Asia, East
and South Africa. The IZW attaches grate importance
to the interdisciplinary work of biologists and veterinarian.
The research aims of the IZW are achieved by cooperation
projects with sanctuaries and zoos in Europe, Asia,
Africa and North America.
The IZW belongs to the Forschungsverbund
Berlin and counts about 150 staff members, the annual
budget of the IZW is about 7,1 million EUR. The Forschungsverbund
Berlin (FVB) pools eight natural-, environmental-, and
life science- orientated institutions which are scientific
independent but intend interests in an incorporated
enterprise. All institutes of the FVB belongs to the
Leibniz-Gemeinschaft.
