Martin Dehnhard born in Grossburgwedel / Hannover studied biology at the University of Hannover from 1975 to 1981 with a major in microbiology and genetics. After he finished his masters thesis in 1981 he began working on his PhD titled "Characterisation of estrogen receptor degrading and converting enzymatic activities" at the Max-Planck-Institute of Experimental Endocrinology (Prof. Dr. P. W. Jungblut) which he finalised in January 1984. From 1984 to 1997, Martin Dehnhard worked as an associate scientist at the University of Hohenheim / Stuttgart at the Institute for Animal Husbandry and Animal Breeding, section Animal Husbandry and Regulation Physiology (Prof. Dr. R. Claus). In 1992 he started his qualification as a professor in the field of animal physiology with the focus on chemical communication. He finalised his postdoctoral lecture qualification with his work on "Investigation of biologically active odours in farm animals" which was awarded with a price of the H. Wilhelm Schaumann Foundation. Subsequently he worked as an associate scientist until 1997 at the same institute.

His scientific topics were:

  • Development of bioassays to detect pheromones
  • Enrichment and isolation of pheromones (cow, goat)
  • Mammogenesis in the goat
  • Development of chromatographic (HPLC) and immunological (RIA, EIA) assays

In 1997 he accepted a position as the leader of the endocrine laboratory at the Leibniz Institute of Zoo and Wildlife Biology in Berlin (Prof. Dr. H. Hofer). His scientific and methodological topics are:

  • Development of non-invasive methods to monitor reproductive and adrenocortical activities in zoo and wildlife animals (measurement of the relevant steroid metabolites in feces and urine)
  • Analyses of volatiles (pheromones?) in biological samples of elephants, giant pandas, hyenas and fossas

Dr. Martin Dehnhard is a private lecturer at the University of Hohenheim (subject: biology of lactation) but also teaches at the Berlin Universities about endocrinology of reproduction and chemical communication in zoo and wildlife animals
