Wildlife pathology and disease diagnostics

The Leibniz-IZW performs pathology investigations of mammals, birds and reptiles from captive and free-ranging populations. Since the foundation of the Leibniz-IZW, the pathology unit has provided this service for the neighbouring zoological garden, the Tierpark Berlin-Friedrichsfelde. Additionally, the research-orientated focus of the pathology service allows the submission of cases of special scientific interest from other zoological gardens within the framework of cooperation agreements. The investigations comprise macroscopic, histo-pathological and bacteriological examination of necropsy material and tissue samples.

The pathology, bacteriology and virology units of the Leibniz-IZW are involved in various research projects within the institute and with external cooperation partners. Of special interest are collaborations with field researchers to study emerging diseases in free-ranging wildlife populations in relation to observed population changes. The detailed pathological and bacteriological diagnostic examinations of individual animals often pave the way for in-depth investigations of emerging disease problems that may remain obscure with routine animal observation or clinical assessments.
