Pathology and Bacteriology service
The IZW performs pathology investigations of mammals, birds and reptiles from captive and free-ranging populations. Since the foundation of the IZW, the pathology unit has provided this service for the neighbouring zoological garden, the Tierpark Berlin-Friedrichsfelde. Additionally, the research-orientated focus of the pathology service allows the submission of cases of special scientific interest from other zoological gardens within the framework of cooperation agreements. The investigations comprise macroscopic, histo-pathological and bacteriological examination of necropsy material and tissue samples. The pathology and bacteriology units of the IZW are involved in various research projects within the institute and with external cooperation partners. Of special interest are collaborations with field researchers to study emerging diseases in free-ranging wildlife populations in relation to observed population changes. The detailed pathological and bacteriological diagnostic examinations of individual animals often pave the way for in-depth investigations of emerging disease problems that may remain obscure with routine animal observation or clinical assessments.
